... Six things you need to consider when choosing carpet for your home

  1. How many people live in the house? This could affect the grade of carpet you choose. 
  2. Is the house owner occupied or rented? This could affect the grade, colour, and style.
  3. Will the carpet be used for stairs? If so, you’ll need to choose a suitable grade.
  4. Will wheelchairs be used on the carpet? This will impact your choice of underlay as well as installation method.
  5. Do pets come indoors?  This will influence the type of carpet you choose as animal claws can pull loop pile.
  6. The style of your home. This will affect the texture and colour you choose.

What does heavy duty and extra heavy duty mean? Put simply heavy duty (HD) and extra heavy duty (EHD) refers to the wool content, lifespan, and quality specifications as determined by Wools New Zealand.  Generally the higher wool content, the harder wearing the carpet will be looking better for longer.
  
What is heavy duty carpet (HD)?  Carpet which is classed as heavy duty has between 28-36 ounces of wool per square yard.

What is extra heavy duty carpet (EHD)?  This carpet is classed extra heavy duty because it has in excessive of 40 ounces of wool per square yard.

What is a loop pile carpet?   Loop pile is formed from loops of yarn standing upright and tends to give a more casual look wearing well.  Twill and Sisal are two popular loop pile styles.  
  
What is a Sisal pile carpet?  A sophisticated, textured sisal-style loop pile in contrasting colours.
  
What is a cut pile carpet?  Cut pile is basically the same as loop pile, but with the tops of the loops cut off with generally a more formal, luxurious look and feel. There are two basic styles of cut pile carpet – “hard twist” and “plush”.

  • Once you carpet a larger space, it will appear around 10% lighter than it did as a smaller piece.
  • Carpet comes in two basic grades – heavy and extra heavy duty, and now more often than not it “looks” out before it wears out.
  • 10% of a room’s heat escapes through the floor, so what you use to cover it becomes vital. Wool is naturally cool in summer and warm in winter, so it’s a great choice to cut your climate control bills.
